Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) experienced a ground incident earlier today when a Finnair ATR72-212A turboprop aircraft (registration OH-ATE) struck its right engine propeller against a ground power unit (GPU) in front of Terminal 2.

The aircraft, scheduled to operate flight AY1175 from Helsinki to Gdansk (GDN), suffered visible damage to its propeller blades as well as the GPU positioned on the apron. Fortunately, no crew members, passengers, or ground staff sustained injuries during the incident.

Emergency Response on the Apron

Airport emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to ensure no fuel leakage or fire hazard occurred due to the propeller strike. Their prompt intervention confirmed that the situation was under control, and normal operations at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport continued without major disruption.

Aircraft Damage and Maintenance

The Finnair ATR72-212A is part of the carrier’s regional fleet, operated mainly on short-haul European routes. Following the incident, the aircraft was grounded for technical inspection and maintenance checks to assess the extent of the damage to its propeller system and engine assembly.

Ground collisions involving aircraft propellers and ground service equipment are rare but can lead to significant operational delays and costly repairs. Safety authorities are expected to review the incident and reinforce ramp safety procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Finnair Operations Continue Smoothly

Despite this setback, Finnair’s overall operations at Helsinki-Vantaa remain unaffected. Passengers on the scheduled flight AY1175 to Gdansk were re-accommodated on alternative services.

This incident highlights the importance of strict ground handling protocols and aircraft safety measures in busy international airports like HEL, where dozens of aircraft movements take place every hour.
