What does the flight engineer do?
Flight engineers are responsible for operating the systems in older airplanes. Before sophisticated computers, complex systems on airplanes such as the electrical, pneumatic, fuel, and hydraulic systems required specially trained operators. Flight engineers were essential for the safe operation of airplanes in the past. Modern jets do not require the constant attention to systems, allowing the pilots to manage them.
Are Flight Engineers also Pilots?
A flight engineer does not pilot the aircraft. Instead, assist the pilot by monitoring the aircraft’s instruments and performing maintenance during the flight. Also responsible for performing a basic inspection of the engine and other mechanical systems before each flight. However, even though flight engineers are not piloting the aircraft, a flight engineer must have a commercial pilot’s license and at least 1,500 hours of flying experience.
