On 18 November, a LATAM Airlines Airbus A320neo (registered CC-BHB) operated domestic flight LA2213 between Lima and Juliaca, Peru. During the take-off roll, however, the aircraft struck a fire engine that crossed the runway.

The fire engine (an ARFF or Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting), and other firefighting vehicles, were on their way for an intervention when the crash occurred:

All 280 passengers and crew members escaped unharmed, the airline said.

“Unfortunately, two aeronautical firefighters have died,” fire brigade commander Luis Ponce told local television station Canal N.

Harrowing footage shows Flight LA2213 steamrolling over a truck that veered onto the runway.

The truck stops and is clipped while trying to drive away, sending the plane up in flames.

The gigantic Airbus A320 comes to a screeching halt and fire fighter crews are seen scrambling to help evacuate passengers.

Images show the plane tipped to one side and the bottom tail end destroyed and burnt out.

The airport was also left in tatters and burnt out following the horror collision.

Others footage showed passengers filling out of the escape ramp near the cockpit and firefighters frantically try to put the fire engulfing them.

Another showed the moment of impact and the plane’s back and right wing exploding in flames.

It then screeches down the runway, leaving a trail of smoke and fire in its wake.

Other shots show the runway and plane doused in fire retardant.

Clarin reporter José María del Pino was among the first to report the incident on Twitter.

He said: “Consolidated information: Latam Juliaca [Peru} – Lima flight collided with an airport truck when landing at the Jorge Chávez Airport in Lima. Security videos show that the plane was landing normally until the truck came across.”

Operations at the airport have been temporarily suspended.

LATAM Peru said: “We regret to confirm that the flight LA2213 that covered the Lima – Juliaca route, operated by LATAM Airlines Peru suffered an accident on the ground. There are no passengers or crew members deceased.”
